This blog is to keep track of my knitting, other craft projects, and the weird bits of life that don't fit anywhere else.

Home Sweet Home

It's been an extremely hectic two weeks. As you may or may not remember, we have been waiting for over a year to move into our new townhouse. This Friday we FINALLY got the keys. We can't quite close or actually live there (the gas won't be connected until the 27th and then it will really be ours), but we have started moving stuff in. We have also purchased appliances, started choosing paint colors, and done other various moving in details. We are just giddy to be moving at long last! Here are some photos of our new digs.

A Bipolar World

First I want to thank everyone for all the nice comments on the pompom tree. I could excuse my long absence from blogging with the excuse that I was covering my wardrobe and apartment in pompoms. However, the truth is much less interesting. First, there were sinus problems which then led to a sinus infection. After some antibiotics I began to think the worst might be over. No such luck. I attended a conference over the weekend and managed to acquire muscle spasms and inflammation in my neck and shoulders. Monday morning I was barely able to move my right side. So, feeling sore and stiff with lingering sniffles and cough, I humbly ask for your forgiveness for being away so long.

The past couple weeks have really been filled with some pretty big ups and downs. First, at my last apointment the baby was measuring just right and looked very healthy. Yay! Then, my health kept failing (thankfully none of it will phase the baby). Boo! Then, we got word that we should be closing on our townhouse by the end of this month. Yay!

With the health issues and the excitement of moving I have been having difficulty sleeping, which I think may have contributed to how I managed to put a huge scratch in my brand new minivan today. Boo! This last point especially bothers me, because it really was my fault. I've been feeling down all day, so to cheer myself up about the stupid thing I did, I am making a list of several things I'm glad I didn't do. We always focus on our accomplishments (positive or negative), so why not take a moment to appreciate those moments we ALMOST did something we'd later regret, but saved ourselves in the nick of time.

Here are 5 things I'm glad I didn't do:

1. Get a tattoo. It was 1992 and it was really starting to be the cool thing to do among college kids. I'm so glad I changed my mind and am not now stuck with a silly picture of Tweety Bird somewhere on my body.

2. Get married at age 21. I had been engaged for 3 years and had planned the whole thing, ceremony, reception, flowers, dress, bridesmaids. Two months before the wedding I made the really difficult decision to call the whole thing off. The money I saved in divorce costs is likely staggering.

3. Major in foreign language. How likely is it that a previously monolingual individual could have made that work as a career? At least you can pick up psychology and gain some skill in it during a 4-year college education, and I really loved doing it.

4. Leave my graduate program. Boy, did I want to quit more times than I can count. But, I stuck it out and finished in 6 years. It was a long, hard slog, but I feel that I finally found my niche and it was all worth it.

5. Break up with the man I later married. When we first started dated I was feeling a bit heartbroken and depressed about another guy. I almost let those lingering feelings convince me to break up with the new guy I was dating. It turns out the new guy could not have been more perfect for me. I can't even remember the name of the guy I was dating before.

So, to end with some actual knitting. This was actually knit by my mother 35 years ago. She made this christening gown while she was pregnant with me, and somewhere she has lots of photos of me wearing it. In a few months I hope to have a bunch more photos of our baby in the same gown.
